Dumaguete City is refered to as a University Town because of the presence of four universities and colleges in a small city. It is a popular educational destination for students of surrounding provinces and cities in Visayas and Mindanao. It has an ambience and tranquil, moderate way of life which makes it conducive for learning. Silliman University is the dominant institution of higher learning, providing the city with a distinct university town atmosphere. It is the first Protestant university in the Philippines and the first American private university in Asia.  Silliman has an campus area of 610,000 m² and is adjacent to and intermixed with the Dumaguete Citys downtown district.  Silliman University is the 4th top performing school in the Philippines, and 2nd if the University of the Philippines System is taken as one, according to a survey conducted by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). It is ranked among the top 150 universities in Asia in International Students Review by the QS Quacquarelli Symonds, an institution that ranks the worlds top universities. Silliman composed of local and international students.  Aside from Silliman University, Dumaguete is also the home of several other universities and colleges like Foundation University, St. Pauls University, Negros Oriental State University and colleges like AMA, STI, ACSAT, Negros Maritime College Foundation Inc. and COSCA.

Because of this, Dumaguete, Philippines has an outsourcing industry that is growing and vastly diversified with services ranging from call centers, publishing, medical transcription, animation, editing, architectural outsourcing, software development and many more. The city is becoming one of the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Information Techology (IT) hubs of the Philippines.

Dumaguete, Philippines is also nicknamed The City of Gentle People because of the endearing qualities of its residents.  It is also dubbed as The motorcycle capital of the Philippines because you can see a lot of motorcycles around the city.  A place with about 18,000 households has more than 30,000 registered single motorcycles and almost 5,000 registered tricycles, the main form of public transport, also known locally as pedicabs.

Dumaguete, Philippines has a land area of 34.26 km².  Between Negros Oriental’s 20 municipalities and 5 cities, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental is the smallest in terms of land area.  It is bounded on the north by the municipality of Sibulan, Negros Oriental; on the south by the municipality of Bacong, Negros Oriental; and on the west by the municipality of Valencia, Negros Oriental. The Dumaguete City is also one of the Philippines coastal cities.

Dumaguete City, Philippines has a topography that is generally flat from two to six kilometers from the shoreline.  It slopes gently upwards to the adjoining municipality of Valencia, Negros Oriental. About 93% of the land have slopes of less than 3%. The remaining areas have 3% to 5% slope.

Dumaguete, Philippines is politically subdivided into 30 barangays , all classified as urban. The eight barangays in the city downtown area are known primarily by number. The smallest barangay is Barangay 4 with an area of only 5.11 hectares, while the biggest barangay is Barangay Banilad with 362.71 hectares.

Dumaguete, Philippines has three major hospitals namely the Holy Child Hospital, Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital, and the Silliman Medical Center which is currently tied-up with St.Luke Medical Center in Metro Manila, Philippines.

Dumaguete is also a gateway to some of the best dive sites in the Philippines, like Apo Island in Dauin, Negros Oriental and spelunking in Mabinay, Negros Oriental, or mountain trekking in Mt. Talinis and Mt.Canlaon which are also in Negros Oriental.

Dumaguete City has a domestic airport which provides daily flights to and from Manila and Cebu City.  It has also a seaport that links the city to Cebu, Dapitan, Bohol, Siquijor and Zamboanga.

Dumaguete, Philippines has a tropical climate and also outside the typhoon belt.  The citys power source is the Geothermal Power Plant located in Palimpinon, Valencia, Negros Oriental. This City is also a focal point for telecommunications with its Triple Redundant Fiber Optic Lines serving as the landing point for all fiber optic cables which links Manila, the capital of the Philippines with all the cities south of Luzon.

One of the best tourist attraction in Dumaguete is the Boulevard. It faces the Mindanao sea and glows with glory as seen on boats coming from the neighboring islands. It is a place for friends and family to hang out and eat sidewalk foods like tempura and fish balls. The Sidewalk bars and bistros in the boulevard, which transforms the boulevard into a livelier and more exciting spot at night, offering you delicious foods, both local and international cuisines.  And in the morning you will see lots of health conscious people exercising, breathing the fresh air from the sea while the sun rises.  The Boulevard is a beautiful attraction that must not be missed.

Dumaguete City, Philippines holds local events or fiesta annually. One of citys exciting event is the Buglasan festival which is celebrated annually. A festival about the different municipalities and cities in Negros Oriental showing off their local delicacies and wonders depicted in small housing stuctures in the Sidlakan Village.  The sidlakan village is open whole year round for tourist to see a small glimpse of Negros Oriental.   During the Buglasan Festival competitions are held in the Sidlakan Village like Duett and Quartett, Balak and Balitw, Pop Dance, Folk Dance, Live Band, Minus-One Singing, and many more.  Also during the festival an award will be given to the most Outstanding Oriental Negrense.  The festival is one of the city’s most highlighted event that lasts for a week with parades, concerts and fireworks displays.

One of the nicest things in this place is that everything you need to go is near it like if you want to go malling, go to a beach, relax in a lake, swim in a waterfalls, detox in a hot springs,  swim in a river, pool, play golf and rest in a hotel within minutes you are already there.  Also if you want to watch whales and dolphins, explore caves, and maybe go camping in just a few hours your already there.

Dumaguete City also has 3 museums, all located inside Silliman University Campus.  The Anthropology Museum, the Gonzales Museum of Natural History, and the Marine Mammal Museum of the Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences.

The Anthropology Museum is located at the old Silliman Hall in the main campus.  It brings the importance of the Filipino’s cultural heritage to the attention of the public. The bulk of the artifacts displayed came from fieldworks, excavations, purchases and donations.

The Gonzales Biology Museum is located at the first floor of the Science Complex. It showcases a collection of preserved animals traditionally found in the tropics such as different kinds of fishes, crustaceans, snakes, eagles, birds, flying lemurs, etc. The museum was named in honor Prof. Rodolfo Gonzales, a former biology teacher of the University.

The Marine Mammal Museum on the other hand contains the 2nd largest collection of whale bones in the world and dolphin bones.  It is located at a facility of the Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences two kilometers north of the main campus.

Dumaguete City also has a mini zoo also within the Silliman Campus.  This mini zoo is known as CENTROP or Center of Tropical Preservation.  It has a mini forest that serves as a captive breeding ground for some of the country’s endangered and endemic species.  This mini forest is also made up of a collection of different species of trees around the country.

Dumaguete was coined from the Visayan word daggit which means to snatch. Because of the frequent marauding attacks of Muslim pirates on the coastal town, and the power to attract and keep her visitors for good.  However, Diego Lopez Povedano in 1572 indicated the place as Dananguet.  But in 1734, Murillo Velarde referred to it, using its present name.

Even if Dumaguete City is moving forward towards urbanization, its old charm will always captivate both local and foreign visitors.
