Negros Oriental


negros-orientalNegros Oriental – A province of the Philippines located in the Central Visayas region. It occupies the south-eastern half of the island of Negros.  Negros Oriental comprises of 6 cities and 19 towns. Dumaguete City is the provincial Capital and seat of government. Despite being the smallest city with regards to land area (33.62 sq. km), it is the most populous. Negros Oriental has a high simple literacy rate of 93.9% as of 2000 and 83.8% functional literacy rate as of 2000.  The primary spoken language in Negros Oriental is Cebuano but can also speak and understand Tagalog and English.

Negros Oriental’s topography is characterized by low, grooved mountain ranges which mostly lie close to the shoreline. Negros Oriental has a tropical climate and also outside the typhoon belt.  Negros Oriental is powered by a Geothermal Power Plant in Palimpinon, Valencia.  The main form of public transport between the cities and municipalities of the province largely consists of privately operated jeepneys and one privately own bus company. For short distances within a town, motorized tricycles (locally known as pedicabs) are available. Negros Oriental has also a domestic airport located in Dumaguete City with multiple flights to and from Manila. The primary seaport of the province is located in Dumaguete City. There is also a RORO port in San Jose for those who are traveling to Cebu using their own vehicles. Popular delicasies of the province include the glutinous rice budbod of Tanjay, Dumaguete’s millet budbud kabug and crackling pork chicharon, Bayawan City’s rice and coconut baye-baye, Sibulan’s dried fruits, Bais City’s sun-crisped danggit fish, Manjuyod’s biscocho de cana and luscious mangoes.
