Dumaguete Belfry Tower

Dumaguete Belfry TowerAccording to the legend Dumaguete City was named after the word ‘daguit’ which means ‘to snatch/kidnap’. The term daguit was given because of the rampant raids by marauding pirates from the south in search for slaves. To warn the fishing village of the incoming raids by marauding pirates the Belfry Tower was created in the year 1811. The belfry is a four-storey ovoid tower supported by three buttresses. Located near, but separated from the Cathedral, it is made of coral and lime with brick facings, and has arched and diamond-shaped windows.

Today, the Dumaguete Belfry Tower still stands proud amidst the modern buildings surrounding it. The amazing huge old Spanish inspired structure that certainly calls the attention of the passerby on the busy Perdices Street is the oldest landmark in Dumaguete City.

Vitamin D

Foods rich in Vitamin D ( Milk, Cheese)I was reading one of my emails that was talking about Vitamin D.   What I found out was that vitamin D can also be a cancer-preventing and fighting agent. Medically known as calciferol, this vitamin was discovered in 1918, in cod liver oil, and popularly called today as the Sunshine Vitamin. New studies revealed that vitamin D regulates cell proliferation and can hold in check the sort of wild cell growth that leads to cancer.  Vitamin D is the only vitamin humans can produce on their own, when exposed to the ultraviolet B from the sun. In 15 minutes, a fair-skinned person, outside on a sunny day, can generate as much as 10,000 to 20,000 IU of vitamin D. This vitamin is recently in the limelight for being a “blockbuster” nutrient that confers even greater health benefits than previously recognized by the medical community. This “re-discovery” has put vitamin D in an altogether new perspective and importance.Vitamin D3 (choleciferol) is the recommended form since it is better absorbed and better utilized by the body compared to vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol).

The Only Immortal Animal in the World

Immortal-JellyfishJust read about an amazing animal recently discovered that is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again. This animal is a turritopsis nutricula species of jellyfish. Scientists say the hydrozoan jellyfish is the only known animal that can repeatedly turn back the hands of time and revert to its polyp state (its first stage of life). The key lies in a process that is called trans-differentiation. This is where a type of cell is transformed into another type. Some animals can undergo limited types of trans-differentiation, regenerating body parts or organs. This is true of salamanders who tend to regrow limbs.
